About Live Wire

The Live Wire tool successfully solves a very difficult technical problem. "How do you REDUCE the incidence of spiking live URD concentric cables?". Notice that we didn't say ELIMINATE the spiking of live cables. Although the Live Wire tool works flawlessly on most cables in a laboratory environment, the types and conditions of cables in the field are too varied to give the correct energized status 100% of the time. The Live Wire tool falls in the same category as automobile air bags, seat belts, and almost all medicines. Statistically, if you use these items, they will work as intended most of the time, but not 100% of the time.
Before you consider if a Live Wire tool is for you, you need to ask yourself if spiking less cables per year is worth the price of this low cost $1,995 instrument. Ask yourself "How many hot cable spikes do I have to prevent before the cost associated with hot spiking exceeds the cost of the Live Wire tool?". Then ask yourself "What is the safety benefit of reducing hot spiking incidents?". We suspect that you will conclude that preventing just a few incidents, by having the Live Wire tool, is preferable to putting up with the preventable live spiking incidents by not having one.
The Live Wire indicates energized status of URD concentric cable by simply touching the semiconductor and is affordable enough to put on every truck. Red light - hot, Green light - not. Very simple. The instrument attaches to a hot stick in a snap. No more are line personnel solely dependent on amp reads, load additions, or outages to determine if an underground cable is hot or not. This tool gives linemen and others another option when evaluating the final decision to spike the cable. With this tool, there is an added sense of security when spiking cables to be later cut and spliced. The Live Wire works on both jacketed and unjacketed cables.
SAFETY NOTE: All safety steps must be taken to prevent accidents before cutting or spiking any cable. At no time does the Live Wire tool take the place of these procedures and it does not represent an absolute in the determination of the cable's energized or de-energized status. This tool is for jacketed and unjacketed concentric cable only.
